My Dad instituted Christmases with a twist. He’d pick a person, that person would pick a color. We’d decorate the tree with like color-themed items, find presents with that color theme and wrap them with the appropriate color paper. When a cousin was going to be in town for the holidays they got to pick the color. For years we named the Christmas by the person’s name, like Shel’s Christmas and everyone knew which year we were talking about. Since I’m thinking about Christmas, I’d pick the Yuletide kit.

My Dad passed away 14 years ago today. The thing that really sticks out in my mind was while he was fighting for his life I was out on disability after back surgery and Dad was in the hospital. My disability checks hadn’t started coming yet but he told me that just because he was in the hospital didn’t mean he couldn’t take care of me. He demanded that I use his paycheck to buy food for me and his granddaughter, my niece who was living with us. I can never forget how caring that was and that proved to me that no matter our differences that he loved me. I felt so guilty using his money to take care of me and after my checks started he refused to take any of the money back. You don’t always have to say I love you with words. I don’t really recall my Dad ever actually saying the words. To this day I still miss him. I think Fishy Friends looks adorable and that would be my choice.
